Current Fees

From 1 March 2026, Smith Street Medical Centre is a mixed billing practice.

We bulk bill:

  • Patients with a valid pension or health care concession card, and
  • Children under 12 years of age.

Saturday and after-hours appointments are charged at full-fee. No discounts available.

Why are we a mixed billing practice?

Our fee structure allows us to:

  • Continue delivering high-quality, patient-focused care
  • Support sustainable GP services in our community
  • Better support pensioners and vulnerable patients

If you are unsure about the cost of your visit, please discuss with the GP at the time of your appointment.

All discounts and billing is at the discretion of the individual GP.

Cancellation Policy

We aim to offer timely appointments so patients who need care can be seen as quickly as possible. Missed appointments reduce availability for other patients and affect our ability to provide care.

If you are unable to attend a booked appointment, please notify the surgery at least 2 hours in advance so the appointment can be offered to another patient.

Appointments missed without at least 2 hours’ notice will be recorded as a Did Not Attend (DNA) and will incur a DNA fee of $80 in line with our practice policy.

The Cost of Quality Care

Today Medicare rebates do not cover the full cost of providing you with medical care.

This is because the rate at which successive governments have indexed the Medicare Schedule fees has been substantially lower than increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and average weekly earnings.

The reality is that Medicare rebates do not cover the cost of providing you with a safe and high quality service.

In addition, in September 2024, the NSW Government introduced an additional Tax Levy on General Practice.

This means:

  • Practices, such as ours, will be forced to increase fees to remain sustainable
  • From 1 September, the out-of-pocket cost for a standard consultation will increase by approximately $5
  • We understand the cost of living pressures most people are facing and have tried our best to manage this Tax Levy in the fairest possible way for everyone.

The fees charged by this practice have to cover all of our practice costs including employing receptionists and practice nurses, and meeting our operating expenses such as rent, medical equipment, electricity, computers and insurance. This results in an out of pocket cost to the patient, as per our fees policy.

If you wish to let the Government know that the Medicare rebate is insufficient to assist you in meeting the cost of your medical care, please contact your local Member of Parliament and/or the Minister for Health.
