Overseas Visitor Appointments
We’re pleased to welcome overseas visitors living, working or studying in Charlestown, Australia. If you’re here on a temporary visa (for work, study or residence) and hold private health insurance that covers medical consultations, you can book an appointment at Smith’s Medical just like any other patient.
Why this matters
- Many temporary visa holders are not eligible for Medicare, meaning they don’t have access to free or subsidised GP services.
- Some visa subclasses require you to maintain adequate health insurance while in Australia (e.g. visa condition 8501).
- Private health insurance (or Overseas Visitors Health Cover, OVHC) can help cover hospital and medical costs for visitors who don’t have full access to Medicare.
Why Choose Us?
At Smith Street Medical’s Charlestown clinic, we make preventive health planning comfortable, clear, and comprehensive.
- Experienced GP and nurse-led assessments
- Focused on prevention and early detection
- Clear communication with tailored advice
- Holistic approach to long-term care
- Friendly, respectful patient experience
What We Offer to Insured Visitors
Health assessments are crucial if you want to better understand your current health condition, catch issues early, and stay in control of your future wellbeing.
- GP (General Practitioner) appointments
- Ongoing care for acute and chronic conditions
- Easy claim support (where allowed under your insurance policy)
Important note: In Australia, private health insurance generally does not cover GP visits outside of Medicare. Always check your insurance policy to confirm whether GP consultations are covered and whether your insurer has a preferred provider network. Currently, we are registered with NIB and BUPA.
Who is Eligible for Overseas Visitor Appointments?
- You are a temporary resident, student, worker or visitor in Australia
- You hold private overseas visitor health insurance (OVHC or equivalent), or a policy that includes medical/doctor consultations
- Your policy is valid and active at the time of your appointment
- Your insurer permits claims for out-of-hospital medical services or reimburses GP consultations
Even if your policy doesn’t cover everything, we’ll help you understand costs up front and navigate claims.
